Ysleta ISD, Eastwood Heights Elementary School, and Del Valle High School teacher Olga Valdez Velez were named among the best in the state for outstanding work with Emergent Bilingual students at the annual Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) conference, which took place earlier this month in Austin.
At the conference, several districts, schools and teachers were honored with 2024 Summies awards, which are organized by online curriculum provider Summit K12 and widely considered to be a testament to excellence in education, emphasizing support for emergent bilingual students.
Ysleta ISD won fourth place among 750 districts in the category of extra-large District of the Year, while Velez won fourth place from among 100,000 educators statewide for High School Educator of the Year.
Eastwood Heights Elementary School came in fifth place for Elementary Campus of the Year award and was selected from more than 4,000 Texas campuses that use Summit K12's educational platforms. The district's selection was based on exceptional performance on the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS), platform engagement, and innovative implementation strategies for emergent bilingual students.
"The Summies celebrate educational excellence, particularly in supporting emergent bilingual students," said John Kresky, Summit K12 founder and CEO. "At Summit K12, our goal is to empower every student to reach their summit, and these awards provide a unique opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the hard work of our district partners who are leading the way in accelerating language acquisition for their English language learners."
